Oleksandr Sternat was born in 1986 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. In 1994, he entered the Specialized Secondary Music School of Kharkiv, and in 1998 started his clarinet studies under the guidance of Professor Valery Altukhov.
Oleksandr won first prizes in numerous national and international competitions: such as the All Ukrainian Contest of Performers of Woodwind and Drum Instruments “Poltavskaya spring” (Poltava, 2002), the First Open Contest of Young Performers (Theodosia Crimea 2002), the Third International Youth Performance Contest “Silver Ring”, (Uzhgorod, 2002), Contest of Young Performers in the nomination “Chamber Ensemble” (Theodosia, Crimea 2003), The First International Contest of Young Performers of Woodwind Instruments (Chernovtsy, Ukraine 2004). He was also a prizewinner at the International Clarinet and Saxophone Competition “Selmer – Paris in Ukraine”, in Lviv (Ukraine 2005).
From a young age, he had the opportunity to perform in numerous important festivals. Between 2000 and 2005 he took part in The International Youth Festival “Being Aivazovsky’s guest”, in Theodosia; International Festival ‘New Names’, Belgorod (Russia 2002); International Festival “Music-our common home” in Kharkov (Ukraine 2001 – 2005). A particular highlight was in 2004 when Oleksandr was invited to take part in the International Festival “Moscow meets friends”, for residents of the CIS and Baltic countries, which took place in Moscow.
Oleksandr performed as a soloist with numerous important orchestras. In 2002, he played as a soloist with the Lviv and Kharkiv Philharmonic Orchestras. The same year «The Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation» invited him to take part in a concert, which was held in Moscow’s Kremlin. He has also been invited to play in the Eighth and Ninth ‘New Young Stars of the Ukraine’ Grand Concerts series, with the Kiev Philharmonic Orchestra. Between 2005 and 2007, Oleksandr was a member of the prestigious “Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Volga Region” in Togliatti city, Russia. Between 2005 and 2010, he was a member of the “Academic Symphony Orchestra “Slobozhansky” , as principal clarinettist, and in 2010, he became a member of the Kharkiv Academic Symphony Orchestra.
In 2009 Oleksandr got his Bachelor degree at “Kharkov University of Arts”, under the guidance of prof. Valery Altukhov. In 2012 he got his “MA in Music Performance” degree followed by “MA in Specialized Music Performance” degree with honours in 2015 from the “Conservatorio Della Svizzera Italiana” in Lugano, Switzerland, under the guidance of M° François Benda.
Oleksandr has also taken master classes with Johannes Peitz, Ralph Manno, Philippe Cuper, Calogero Palermo, Sabine Meyer.
